Junior Open 201511/09/2015

2015 has been a pretty hectic and exciting year for SALJGA, we have had The Open Championship on our doorstep, a full fixture list of competitions, winter and spring coaching programmes, visits to Gleneagles and Wentworth….aw yeah, and just the small matter of getting to meet Tiger Woods! Phew, we have been really busy!

Sunday 6th of September was the day of our Junior Open, and offered the perfect opportunity to reflect on this amazing year, and also to recognise the competition winners from throughout the season. It was a busy day, with 5 different competitions running, along with our BBQ and prize-giving ceremony.

We started nice and early with the Challenge Tour players (under 15 handicaps), with the first tee time at 08:24am on the Eden course. In this category we had several of the golfers playing in their final every SALJGA competition, as they will be off to University next year and too old to be included in the programme. The standard throughout the year in this category has been excellent, and the season climax did not disappoint. Vincent Clark playing off a 6 handicap scored 37 points, beating Matthew McAnaw into second place with a very solid 36 points.

Following on from this, also on the Eden course, were the Mini Tour boys section. This included any boys with a handicap ranging from 15 to 36. There were several very good scores, as has been the way throughout the summer. However on this occasion, Tom Constance score of 41 points was just too hot to handle for everyone else. That was a great score from Tom, who will certainly see his handicap trimmed after that, really well played!

The mini tour girls section was next, and for this we changed course over to the Strathtyrum. The girls have done really well this season, with every girl playing having reduced their handicap at some point throughout the year. On this occasion, it was one of our youngest competitors who came through to win, Niamh Headon with a brilliant score of 37 points was enough to win. Niamh only got her full 18 hole handicap a couple of weeks ago, and to go straight onto winning the junior open is some amazing feat!

A new addition to the junior open this year, was the 9 hole Strathtyrum competition. This new competition was to encourage up and coming players to play on the bigger Strathtyrum Course, and to keep a medal score for 9 holes. This was a huge success and the players really enjoyed the round, some of them playing the big course for the first time ever. The scoring was very impressive to go along with this excitement, and the boys winner was Patrick Earley with a 9 hole total of 49, and the girls champion was Annabelle Sey with her total of 57. Well played all!

The final part of the competition was the Balgove 9 hole shotgun, which had an impressive 40 competitors. This competition is for our younger golfers, who are working towards getting handicaps and moving onto the 18 hole course in the future! As mentioned we had a great turnout and everyone really enjoyed the 9 holes not to mention playing really well too! It was a very close competition with several people tying for the best score, but after a countback situation we had the boy’s winner as Angus McCallum with a score of 43, and Kaitlyn Lumsden winning the girls with a 46.

After the golf was over, everybody met over at The Eden Clubhouse, to enjoy a delicious BBQ in the afternoon sunshine. We then awarded the prizes from throughout the season with a presentation. It was a really great day, which requires much effort from many different people to make a success. We would like to thank all of the parents and volunteers who helped to walk with the groups and score on Sunday. Our mention of the volunteers also goes further, with a special mention to our amazing volunteer coaches. These people donate their time and commitment to volunteer at our 10 week lesson programme. Without this help the SALJGA coaching programme simply would not be possible, so we are very thankful for the support.
Also a special mention to the catering staff at The Eden Clubhouse, who delivered a delicious and eye watering BBQ and buffet. It was very enjoyable J and we would like to say a big thank you!

So, it was a busy day, to end a busy season! But after this past years highlights, who knows where next year might take us….
